Decline in China exports slows in March

BEIJING -- China's exports in March were down by double digits from a year earlier, but the decline was smaller than in February, the latest sign that the economy could be over the worst of a slump induced by the global credit crunch.
Exports in March fell 17.1 percent from a year earlier to $90.29 billion, the fifth straight monthly drop, the General Administration of Customs announced Friday.
In February, the country's exports plummeted 25.7 percent year-on-year, the worst decline in more than a decade.
"This indicates a sign of improvement in the country's foreign trade," the customs agency said.
The agency noted that exports in March rose 32.8 percent from February while imports grew 14 percent month-on-month.
China's export industries, which account for about 40 percent of its GDP, have been hit hard as orders from the United States and other countries dry up during the current world economic crisis.
The slowing decline did not come as a surprise to analysts but the fall is smaller than expected.
Economists polled by Reuters expected a 21.5 percent fall in March.
Helen Qiao and Yu Song at Goldman Sachs believed that the latest figure shows that the word's third largest economy is gaining strength, due in part to rapid loan growth.
Chinese banks extended a record 1.87 trillion yuan in new loans in March, two state newspapers reported on Tuesday.
The export figures came three days after the World Bank said that China is likely to emerge from its economic slump later this year, helping the rest of Asia stabilize and possibly rebound.
"A ray of hope may be emerging with signs of China's economy bottoming out by mid-2009," the bank said Tuesday in a statement. "A recovery in China -- fueled largely by the country's huge economic stimulus package -- is likely to begin this year and take full hold in 2010, potentially contributing to the region's stabilization, and perhaps recovery."
China Association of Automobile Manufacturers revealed Thursday that China's auto sales hit a monthly record of 1.11 million vehicles in March, exceeding US sales for the third month in a row.
Imports in March slumped 25.1 percent year-on-year to $71.73 billion, compared with a 24.1-percent decline in February.
Total import and export value was $162.02 billion last month, down 20.9 percent year-on-year.
Trade surplus rose to $18.56 billion, up 41.2 percent from a year earlier. This was compared with $4.84 billion in February.

Two executed for Kashgar terror attack on police

KASHGAR, Xinjiang -- Two men were executed in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region yesterday for last August's terrorist attack on border police that left 17 dead and 15 injured.
The Intermediate People's Court of Kashgar prefecture announced the death penalties, approved by the Supreme People's Court, before an audience of about 4,000 local officials and residents at a stadium in Kashgar city prior to the executions.
Abdurahman Azat, 34, and Kurbanjan Hemit, 29, both locals of Kashgar, were executed elsewhere, out of public sight, but details are unknown.
They had been convicted of intentional homicide and illegally producing guns, ammunition and explosives, according to verdicts announced by the Supreme People's Court on Dec 17 last year.
The Kashgar court found the two carried out the terrorist attack on Aug 4 to "sabotage" the Beijing Olympic Games that began on Aug 8, 2008.
The court heard they bought materials to make explosives, two guns and ammunition in February and March, and chose to attack border police in a town of Kashgar, near China's border with Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Armed with guns, explosives, knives and axes, they drove a heavy truck that they had stolen to the site around 6 am.
Two hours later, Abdurahman Azat drove the truck toward a team of more than 70 police - who were on a regular morning exercise - killing 15 and injuring 13.
When the truck overturned he detonated the explosives, killing another person.
At the same time, Kurbanjan Hemit threw explosives at the gate of the police station and wielded a knife at the police who had been run over by the truck. He killed one policeman and injured two others.
The two were arrested at the scene.

The 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar year is an important day for the Chinese people. The day is called Duan Wu Festival, or Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated everywhere in China. This festival dates back to about 2,000 years ago with a number of legends explaining its origin. The best-known story centers on a great patriotic poet named Qu Yuan.The customs vary a lot in different areas of the country, but most of the families would hang the picture of Zhong Kui (a ghost that can exorcise), calamus and moxa in their houses. People have Dragon Boat Races, eat Zong Zi (dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves) and carry a spice bag around with them.Zhong KuiZhong Kui is the exorcist par excellence. His picture, a fierce-looking male brandishing a magic sword, used to be hung up in Chinese houses in order to scare away evil spirits and demons, especially in the time of Dragon Boat Festival. Hanging Calamus and MoxaOn this day, most of the families would also hang calamus and moxa (oriental plants) on the front door. The Qingming Festival sees a combination of sadness and happiness. This is the most important day of sacrifice. Both the Han and minority ethnic groups at this time offer sacrifices to their ancestors and sweep the tombs of the diseased. Also, they will not cook on this day and only cold food is served. On each Qingming Festival, all cemeteries are crowded with people who came to sweep tombs and offer sacrifices. Traffic on the way to the cemeteries becomes extremely jammed.

The customs have been greatly simplified today. Its uniqueness lies in that people fly kites not during the day, but also at night. A string of little lanterns tied onto the kite or the thread look like shining stars, and therefore, are called "god's lanterns."

The Qingming Festival is also a time to plant trees, for the survival rate of saplings is high and trees grow fast later. In the past, the Qingming Festival was called "Arbor Day". But since 1979, "Arbor Day" was settled as March 12 according to the Gregorian calendar.

Shaolin Kungfu (Shaolin Martial Art) is one of the most influential genres of Chinese martial arts, and it's named after where it originated -- the Shaolin Temple, founded in 495 AD on the Songshan Mountain in Dengfeng County, Henan Province in Central China. The monks in the Shaolin Temple began to study martial arts during the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420-581) and this tradition prevailed during the Sui and Tang dynasties (581-907).

Yuan settlement trial starts in five cities

China's State Council, or the Cabinet, announced Wednesday to start a pilot program allowing firms in five cities to settle cross-border trade deals in renminbi yuan.
The cities are Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dongguan. The latter four cities are all in South China's Guangdong province.
Attendees at a State Council executive meeting Wednesday, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, agreed settling cross-border trade deals in yuan was important for promoting economic and trade ties between China and neighbouring countries and regions.
Information about when and how the trial program will start was not available.
The State Council urged departments concerned to issue relative rules as soon as possible.

Culture fans thousands of miles from Beijing can now visit its famous Forbidden City, through a three dimensional recreation of the vast palace that also allows them to dress up as an imperial eunuch and meet a courtesan.
One of the jewels in China's cultural crown, the sprawling complex in the heart of the capital already gets tens of thousands of real-life visitors each day.
But now online tourists can also watch the Qing dynasty emperor feast at dinner, train fighting crickets and feed them with blood-fattened mosquitoes, or practice archery with the help of a courtesan.
At the virtual palace, unveiled on Friday, they can also dress up as part of the huge imperial entourage.
"When you enter the Forbidden City you choose one of nine historical costumes, which is to give a sense of history but also keep a sense of decorum," said John Tolva, program manager at IBM who led the project, dubbed "Beyond Space and Time."
"You can't run and you can't fly," he added, a restriction that aims to prevent other virtual visitors, whom you can see and interact with, being distracted.
The program does not shy away from the racier sides of imperial history, shaped in part by the legions of eunuchs who controlled portions of court life and could rise to great power.
"One of the costumes you can chose is a eunuch," said IBM Vice President Paula W. Baker -- though to spare blushes that avatar is only labeled "imperial servant."
They also appear in some of the bureaucratic roles they might have filled hundreds of years ago.
"There are eunuchs, for instance in the 'approving imperial memorials' scenes," Tolva added.
Those who are interested in other intimate aspects of the emperor's life have a chance to get an up close look at the women chosen to serve him.
"There is a painting being done of the emperor and the courtesans are there, orbiting about tending to him while the painter does his job," Tolva said.
"And for all the activities where you actually do something there is an attendant who is styled as a courtesan."
The museum hopes the program, which is based on computer gaming software, will earn new fans for a cultural landmark which survived China's tumultuous 20th century in remarkably good form.
It has been over three years in the making and cost over $3 million, provided by IBM as part of a community program.
Exacting curators feel the result offers a good introduction to the palace, but worry there has been a certain sacrifice of historical accuracy for the convenience of a modern visitor.
"You wouldn't have been able to just wander around like this," said Hu Chui, director of the Information Department, gesturing at a soldier avatar striding toward a central hall.
"You would have been kowtowing and anyway, he is on the imperial pathway. You would get arrested for that."

Hu arrives in Washington for summit on financial crisis

President Hu, and other leaders from the Group of Twenty (G20) members, have been invited by US President George W. Bush to Saturday's meeting, the first in a series of summits to mitigate what economists predict could be a long and deep downturn.
Later in the evening, the Chinese president is expected to attend a dinner hosted by Bush for all the leaders.
"The leaders will review progress being made to address the current financial crisis, advance a common understanding of its causes, and, in order to avoid a repetition, agree on a common set of principles for reform of the regulatory and institutional regimes for the world's financial sectors," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino last month in making the announcement of the summit.
At a press briefing last week, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei said that China expects to build a fair, inclusive and efficient international financial system.
"We hope to consult with other participants to reform the international financial system and finally try to establish a fair, inclusive and efficient system," He said.
He said that China would take an active part in the summit-related activities in a constructive attitude, work together with all the parties for the achievement of pragmatic outcome, and impel the international community to tackle the financial crisis in a timely, comprehensive and effective manner.
The members of the G20 include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain,Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.
The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the president of the World Bank, the secretary-general of the United Nations and the chairman of the Financial Stability Forum have also been invited to the Washington summit.
Washington is the first leg of President Hu's five-nation trip. He will later pay state visits to Costa Rica, Cuba, Peru and Greece. During his stay in Peru, he will attend the Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Lima.

英语中如何优雅地骂人
　　讲英语难, 吵架更难. 虽说人在国外总是想尽办法以和为贵, 但要跟人家吵架怎么办?　　很多人一生气, 所有的英文都忘光了, 平常英文就说不出口, 更何况是吵架, 所以满脑子浮现的不是 Fxxx 就是 Sxxx 这样是很不好的. 我还听过有一个人很绝, 英文骂不过人家就用中文骂, 反正对方听得懂听不懂都无关紧要, 重要的是让他知道你很凶, 而且你正在骂他就行了. 这集还是让我们来看看一些比较文雅的骂人以及吵架的方式.　　
1. I'm so fed up with your BS. Cut the crap.　　我受够了你的废话, 少说废话吧.　　美女 (美国的女人) 是不喜欢说 shit 这个不雅的字的, 所以她们就说 shoot, 或是BS(=Bull shit) 来表示她们还是很有气质的. "Cut your crap." 是当你听到对方废话连篇, 讲个不停时, 你就可以说, "Cut the crap." 相当于中文里的废话少话。　　
2. Hey! wise up!　　放聪明点好吗?　　当别人作了什么愚蠢的事时, 你可以说, "Don't be stupid" 或是 "Don't be silly."但是这是非常不礼貌的说法. 比较客气一点的说法就是, wise up! 它就相当于中文里的放聪明点. 你也可以用坚酸刻薄的语气说. Wise up, please. 然后故意把 please 的尾音拉得长长的.　　也有人会说, Hey! grow up. 意思就是你长大一点好不好? 例如有人二十岁了却还不会自己补衣服, 你就可以说 Hey! grow up. 这根 wise up 是不是也差不多呢?　　
3. Put up or shut up.　　要吗你就去做, 不然就给我闭嘴.　　有些人就是出那张嘴, 只会出意见, 此时就可以说, Put up or shut up. 要注意的是,Put up 字典上是查不到"自己去做" 的意思, 但是见怪不怪, 很多笔记本上的用法都是字典上查不到的. 比方说今天你在写程式, 有人明明不懂却喜欢在一旁指挥你, 这时候你就可以说, Put up or shut up.　　有时为了要加强 shut up 的语气, 老美会把它说成, shut the f**k up. 这句话常在二人火气很大时的对话中可以听到, 例如电影 The house on the haunted hill 女主角身陷鬼屋之中, 其它人又七嘴八舌时, 她就很生气地说了一句, shut the f**k up.　　这句话也让我想到一句成语, walk the walk, talk the talk, 也就是说到就要作到,有点像是中文里知行要合一的意思, 或是只说, walk the talk 也可以.　　
4. You eat with that mouth?　　你是用这张嘴吃饭的吗?　　别人对你说脏话, 你就回敬他这一句, 言下之意, 就是你的嘴那么脏, 你还用这张嘴吃饭.还有一种说法, "You kiss your Momma with that mouth?" 就是说你也是用这脏嘴亲你妈妈的吗? 所以下次记得如果有老美对你说脏话, 记得不要再 Fxxx 回去, 保持风度,说一句, "You eat with that mouth?" 就扯平了　　
5. You are dead meat.　　你死定了.　　我们说你完蛋了, 可以说 "You are dead." 或是像这样说 "You are dead meat." 意思都是一样的, 比如说你跟别人说过不淮碰我的东西, 但有人他就是老爱用你的东西, 下次要是再被你抓到, 你就可以说, "You are dead meat."　　
6. Don't you dare!　　How dare you!　　你好大的胆子啊!　　这句话跟中文里 "你好大的胆子" 是一样, 可以在二种场合说, 第一种是很严肃的场合,比如说小孩子很调皮, 讲又讲不听, 父母就会说, "Don't you dare!" 那意思就是这个小孩要当心点, 不然等会就要挨打了. 另一种场合是开玩笑, 比如有人跟你说我跟某网友约会去了, 你说 "Don't you dare?" 就有点开玩笑的语气. (你不怕被恐龙给吃了吗?)　　Dare 在英文里还有许多有趣的用法, 例如, "You dare me." 或是 "I double dare you." 还有一种游戏叫 Truth or Dare, 限于篇幅, 容后再作介绍.　　
7. Don't push me around.　　不要摆布我.　　这个词很有意思, 把你推来推去, 作摆布解释, 如果有人指挥你一下作这个一下作那个,你就可以用这一句 Hey! Don't push me around. 通常当我讲 "Don't push me around."时, 我还会想到一个字 bossy. Bossy 就是说像是老板一样, 喜欢指挥别人. 例如,"You are so bossy. I don't like that."　　这句话也可以单讲, "Don't push me." 或是 "Don't push me any further." 还有一句根push 有关的成语, 叫 push the button, 意思就是, 指使, 操纵. 例如, "I know why you are doing this, someone is pushing your button!"　　
8. Are you raised in the barn?　　你是不是乡下长大的啊?　　这句话是形容一个人没教养, 但是是比较开玩笑的语气. 比如说有人坐没坐像, 你就可以对他说这一句. Barn 原指　仓. 我翻成乡下比较能跟中文的意思结合. 老美常用barn或是backyard 来形容一个人没有教养或是没有文化, 像是那天在电视上听到一句,"No backyard language in my house." 就是说, 在我的家里不准讲粗话.　　
9. You want to step outside?　　You want to take this outside?　　你想要外面解决吗?　　老美跟我们一样, 要是二个人一言不合吵起来了, 可能就有人要说这一句了. 指的就是要不要出去打架啦. 还有一些我听过类似的用法, 例如, "Do you want to pick a fight?"　　你要挑起争端吗? 或是 "This means war." 这就意谓着跟我宣战.　　
10. You and what army?　　You and who else?　　你和哪一路的人马啊?　　要是有人跟你说 "Do you want to step outside?", 就回他这一句吧. 意思是说,是喔... 那你找了多少人马要来打架啊? 有时候电视里出现这句对白的时候, 还会打出一排军队的计算机动画, 非常地有意思.　　还有一句话也很好玩, 叫 "Who's side are you on?" 这就是在快要打架时, 你问人家说,你到底是站在哪一边的?

<2>Baotu Spring Park: Baotu Spring Park is a spring-featured theme garden located at the north of Thousand Buddha Mountain (Qianfo Mountain). It is at the west of Quancheng Square and south of Daming Lake. Ranking the first among the “72 Famous Springs” of Jinan, Baotu Spring is the symbol and logo of Jinan.
